Case Study: AMG Trailers
Automated Trailer System for AMG Trailers
Overview
AMG Trailers partnered with Telemation to elevate the reliability, efficiency, and safety of their live-bottom trailer systems. Unlike traditional dump trucks, which raise the entire bin to discharge materials, AMG’s trailers employ a horizontal conveyor belt system that ensures a controlled material flow without raising the trailer—enhancing safety and stability, especially on uneven terrain.
To deliver precise, wirelessly controlled functionality, Telemation integrated a tailored automation and remote control system built around a CANOpen communication protocol, Tiger transmitter/receiver, and an EPEC control unit.
The Challenge
Live-bottom trailers must adhere to a strict operational sequence to prevent mechanical stress and avoid costly damage. Manual control systems left room for human error, such as attempting to open doors before unlocking them or activating the conveyor belt before the doors were open.
Key concerns included:
- Risk of system damage from incorrect operation sequence
- Operator confusion over trailer status at job sites
- Need for more responsive and remote operability
- Lack of feedback and real-time diagnostics
Safety-First Design with Intelligent Sequencing
The live-bottom trailer follows a predefined logic sequence, enforced through system interlocks:
Door Unlocking: The trailer must unlock the doors before proceeding.
Door Opening: Conveyor belt functions only activate once the door is at least partially open.
Conveyor Operation: Ensures materials are discharged safely, at a controlled speed and direction.
These steps are controlled automatically and cannot be bypassed, eliminating risks due to operator error.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Wireless Operation: Operators control the trailer remotely, reducing exposure to hazards.
-
Real-Time Status Monitoring: On-screen and LED indicators show which functions are available, ensuring full system visibility.
-
Built-In Interlocks: Prevent unsafe function activation and avoid costly mechanical faults.
-
Efficient Material Handling: Conveyor belt allows smooth, horizontal discharge—ideal for tight spaces or uneven sites.
-
Operator Confidence: Simple interface and robust logic reduce cognitive load and error rates on-site.
Conclusion
The result is a highly reliable, safe, and user-friendly trailer system that allows AMG’s clients to optimise their material transport operations. With advanced sequencing, wireless control, and real-time status feedback, this trailer automation system represents a forward-thinking approach to transport engineering solutions.
